Leki

Born in Kinshasa (Congo) from a Belgian mother and a Congolese father, Karoline Kamosi, spend the first 6 years of her life living in Africa, Kenya, before definitely moving to Belgium.
Being the youngest of five and really being a late comer, Karoline was influenced by many different styles of music, from the beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Jacksons & the Andrew sisters, to Kate Bush, David Bowie, Queen, to the French chansons...But it was the sister who came right before her who introduced her to the world of hip-hop.
Manuela Kamosi aka Ya Kid K from Technotronic, came up with the name Leki-K. Leki meaning little one/ Benjamin/little sister in Lingala which is the second official language of Congo (the K (for Kamosi) was eventually dropped, leaving just Leki).
Although Leki always had a love for music and entertainment, it was Ya Kid who gave her a chance to do some real work, for Technotronic in a “real” recording studio, Leki was 12 at the time. After a year of work though, it was decided Leki was too young and the project was stopped. But not Leki, she focused on dancing in hiphop groups, eventually forming her own, where she also started experimenting with writing rhymes.
At the age of 16 she signed to a production company, for whom she recorded her first album (+ a lot of extra tracks), but unfortunately it never saw the light of day.
But it did give her the opportunity to do numerous promo shows in different European countries: Belgium, UK, Switzerland, Germany, France and Holland.
By the age of 18 Leki took some time out from music, to go to university and get her degree from lawschool.
In those same college years, she got hired by TMF (the music factory, which is now a part of MTV networks) to start her own R&B/hiphop show, cool sweat; which was the first show in it’s kind to air on BelgiumTV.
Since her graduation Leki still works for TMF hosting cool sweat and the cool sweat chart, she’s also got a spot on the national radiostation Studio Brussels, where she’s the host of Juice, blazing hip-hop, R&B, dancehall and Nu-soul over the airwaves. But most importantly, she’s been getting ready to put her first love first!!! Breakin’ out is the first Leki song ever to be officially released.

The video was recorded in LA directed by Abdullh Malik (Jay Z, Spike Lee) and produced by blueyedpictures (Video’s for Prince, Red Hot Chillipeppers,…) Breakin’ Out became a huge hit (sales & Airplay top 10 for several weeks) in Belgium and Holland, is currently heading to the top 10 of the single charts in France and was last week the highest new entry in the German DDC dance charts at n° 40 in the first week – of vinyl release. In the DCC chart “Breakin’ Out” even made it to the N°1 position!

LEKI’s second single “Crazy” is being fully promoted in Belgium and has been picked up by all the major radio and television stations! A new LEKI hit is born!

LEKI’s new music video “Crazy” (of Mostiko/ CNR Records in Belgium), produced by 1171 Production Group, has been so well received that it will be the next super clip on all the major Belgium clip stations. The video is catchy, cool, and carries unexpected impact. Directed by Michael Rooney, who had collaborated with music video director Spike Jonze and actor Christopher Walken on the music video “Weapon of Choice” for Fatboy Slim – winner of the Triple Crown Music Video, “Crazy” clearly benefits from the application of his creative touch and artistic use of space and movement. Rooney is also a three time MTV Award winner for Best Choreography, and has received three Bob Fosse awards for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography, Music Video, and Commercials. Alex Moon was the producer, Max Goldman did the camera work, and the executive producers were Grant and Nancy Cihlar. The video is both visually and acoustically stimulating, boasting innovative choreography, rhythm driven editing, and catchy lyrics. Award winning choreographers, Tony and Richmon Talauega, who have worked with artists such as Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Usher, Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan, and Santana, were behind the outstanding choreography in "Crazy."
The video was shot in a downtown loft as well as on a 14th floor rooftop setting on June 12, 2004. In the video, Leki flaunts her “craziness,” proudly announcing and embracing her quirks. Throughout, the song and video concentrates self-acceptance, proclaiming: “I’m crazy but it’s OK.”

The debut album will be released in the Benelux on July 26th
